I need a dns caching system setup in order to be able to work with a commercial rbl. This is their requirements:

    ####################
For direct queries, your locally-hosted DNS server MUST do one of the following:
    either...
    (1) Your locally-hosted DNS server must be set up as an industry-standard caching DNS server that gets its answers by using root hints, then queries authoritative servers directly. This is how most DNS servers are setup after their installation, unless/until someone goes out of their way to change that by instead forwarding all queries to specific 3rd party DNS servers.
    or...
    (2) Or, alternatively, you will need to set up a conditional forwarder which forces your DNS server to get its answers for DNSBL queries to invaluement directly from a particular designated server (with no “middle man” dns server involved!). We provide instructions for that when needed, upon request. (If applicable, please ask about that in your trial request e-mail)

    #####################

I now cpanel has the dnsadmin caching system or whatever it is, but I dont think thats going to be enough. Any suggestions on how I should get this going on my centos 7.2 cpanel system that also does connect to a dns only cluster?

    Hello,

The default configuration should allow you to use the custom RBL. However, could you let us know any specific error messages if it's not working as intended? Also, note the following thread showcases a free custom RBL that may interest you:

    Thank you.

Are you sure, as far as I know, the query happens to a public dns server first and root hints are not used. Am I wrong?

The DNS configuration file is stored at:

    Code:
    /etc/named.conf
You can find discussion of adjusting the recursion settings on threads such as:

You may want to contact the support team for the commercial RBL service you are utilizing for additional information about what's suitable for your DNS configuration.

    Thank you.
