    First post here :)

Am currently hosting a domain for a client, but need to point said domain to the site where the website is to be hosted.

I want to keep the Mail Exchange on our server though.

Please could someone assist in getting this to work.

    Look forward to your replies.

If it is only for a short time, them make a redirect (just put a .htaccess redirect record into the public_html folder of the domain in question). This can also be done via CPanel menu without any unix or DNS knowledge.

If you want a permanent change it depends on the domain registrar DNS entries:

Are you are running BIND (nameservers) on your system and the domains registrar lists your CPanel nameservers as authoritative for the domain? Then go to WHM edit DNS entry and change all "A" entries you want (at least domain.com and www, but maybe also ftp) to the new IP number of the new host. As long as you leave the "MX" entries, mail will be handled by your CPanel server.

Are you using an external DNS service, (either the registrars or a third parties one) then the do the same there and not in your Cpanel.

    WHM > Edit DNS Zone > clientdomain.com

    Code:
    clientdomain.com - 14400 - IN - A - 0.0.0.0 (ip to server hosting web)
    www - 14400 - IN - CNAME - clientdomain.com.
    ftp - 14400 - IN - CNAME - clientdomain.com.
then just leave the mx record point to mail.clientdomain.com.

    and change
    Code:
    mail - 14400 - IN - CNAME - clientdomain.com.
    to
    mail - 14400 - IN - A - 0.0.0.0 (ip of your mail server)

Theres multiple ways to do this.. this is just one.

It needs to be a permanent change as the backend CMS software cannot be installed on our servers.

I tried changing the A entries to the website servers IP and the MX and mail entries to the IP of our server, but when I do that, they cannot access their mail even though I have stipulated that it needs to use our servers as the Mail Exchange server.

Please read my first posting to your thread. You need to find out where the authoritative DNS entry is.

SSH to your unix shell and type
    dig thedomaininquestion.com

    read where the
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
    points to.

Are you running a DNS server on your Cpanel or not? - Who hosts the DNS entries for the domain in question? Read the DIG output.
