DNS quesiton - changing A record but keeping email?

We host DNS locally for all accounts.

Customer requested that we change A record to a different IP but wanted to continue to use email services. But now, none of their email is being delivered.

So I change the MX record to the server IP. Still no joy.

Any advice?

there shouldnt be any issues with this, I have a few customers with the same setup, leave the account as-is (if you've messed it up, back the mail up, delete the account, then re-add it) in the dns zone just change the IP addresses assigned to the a records to the new ones (obviously less the mail. record ;)).
