Currently I am running three servers, located in three different data centers. Each server is set up with it's own name servers, for example, server 1 has the name servers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, server 2 has the name servers ns3 and ns4.domain.com, etc. This works out pretty well except when I need to move a customer from one server to another, then not only do I have to move the account, but change the customers name servers as well.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on a better way to set this up? I would love to have one server handle everything, but I'm not sure If I can do this since they are all in different data centers.

Thanks for the link. Just a couple of quick questions about this.

1. Does it matter if the master and slave server are located in different data centers?

2. Does any of this effect reseller name servers?

We currently have one dns server in one datacentre and one in another.
It works fine, when one goes down - the other takes over seeminglessly.. took a day or so to get it working nicely though :) couple of teethin problems..

It does not effect any reseller's name servers at all.

I belive its better practice to have at least one dns off site, as if your poviding dns services to people and the noc dies.. all your DNS would die.
We are going to change the way ours is done in the next month or so and have Primary and secondary at one NOC then have a third at another.

Hope that helps..

The best practice for Slave DNS is off site. ;)

Thanks for all the help. It looks like it may be a long weekend getting everything set up.

DNS host

an outside DNS hosting vendor to consider:

zoneedit.com

VERY affordable, very reliable, very flexible, and DNS hosting is all they do. (no conflict of interest, just a satisfied customer)
