Generally when I see "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'", I do this:
    Code:
    # /etc/init.d/mysql stop
    # ps -ef | grep mysql | grep -v grep | awk '{print "kill -9", $2}' | sh
    # touch /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
(!$ is last variable on previous line in bash - /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock)
    # chown mysql:mysql !$
    # /etc/init.d/mysql start
    (make sure its running)
    # ps -ef | grep mysql
    # mysql -uroot -p`cat /root/.my.cnf | grep pass | sed s/"pass\=\""// | sed s/\"//`

The last line does nothing spectacular... it just logs you in. If you see:
    Code:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 71293 to server version: 4.0.25-standard-log

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

    mysql>

    You're golden.
