Is there a setting that will keep apache from displaying the files in document root

eg: in my Doc Root there is /usr/local/apache/htdocs/index.html as a default index page for those that do not have one... as well the suspend page that is in here is not accessable as well.

Anyone know what I could change so the the Document Root will serve as a Default.

    Thanks
