I'm interested in connecting to my server via sftp when uploading files but I am a bit confused on how to do this. I have an SSL certificate setup in cPanel but how do I setup a secure FTP account? Can anyone elaborate on setting up sftp?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

WS_FTP will allow you to connect with SFTP.

    Go on, have a guess
Dont' get confused between SFTP and FTP over SSL, they're completely different things.

FTP over SSL should be enabled by default on cPanel servers, however you it won't work with a correctly configured SPI firewall if you have one setup (you have to open up a port range for it).

SFTP can be used, but you have to enable an SSH shell for the main cPanel account username. Using sftp you cannot create additional user access for the same account through cPanel.

I found this thread while searching for similar need.

My actual need is that one of my client need to give Secure FTP access to his users. As chirpy mentioned that "Using sftp you cannot create additional user access for the same account through cPanel". Still there must a way around for providing SFTP to additional users without compromising Server Security.

Does something needs to be configured further?
What solution can soemone suggest so that things start working and we can provide SFTP to additional users?

    Thanks in advance...

If you want to have additional accounts to access to sftp then you could add a system user manually and make their homedir where the directory is ie. /home/someuser/www/somedir

    # man adduser

That's not quite a viable sulotion, and almost defeats the purpose of using something like cPanel.

Surely, this issue can be addresses properly?
