Actually YES and NO.
You run all the scripts from YOUR site. It actually registers it FROM YOUR SITE, BUT the call that registers it is a &CALL& to their servers.
It just returns a Yes or No, then you can write it to the database in the YES or NOT do so if it's Rejected.
It works VERY well.
If you want to see it in action, you can look at ours, at

I have NO problems with them at all!
sounds like the one you where using was Go Daddy, they run all theirs on their site, your more like an affiliate with them, except you can customize the layout a little bit. I can always tell when someone is using Go Daddy cause they all look alike. I don't like their site. Prices are decent for the .com, .net, and .org.
OpenSRS blows them away on the .biz and .info (.us too)
I'd prefer to run them myself so I can completely customize the look and feel, functions too. Plus .com is kinda dying. Not really but geeze, their are not that many GREAT names left in .com .biz however is rocking, and has tons of GREAT names available.
Anyways, I'm working on a Demo version where people can demo the registration before they use our system, that way they can see how EASY it is to register with us.
Basically in a NUTSHELL, you are an &Affiliate& of OpenSRS, but you have a LOT more control. More like a reseller, and you get a pretty distinct name, RSP which is Registration Service Provider.
You cannot say your &ICANN Accredited& but you CAN say &In Association with an ICANN Accredited Registrar&, and there are even a few banners floating around that you can get that say such.
HTH!
