I'm putting up a forum. One of the come-ons will be a vanity email forwarding address to the registered email. As example, if I register my account as john@gmail.com with barack as user name to the forum www.candidate.me, barack@candidate.com will forward emails to john@gmail.com.

I've already read the API for forwarding but I still have some questions:

    1) will forwarders eat up server resources/bandwidth? or is it just tells the sender to send somewhere else?

    2) Can I do a PHP script to generate the XML?

    3) Can this be with a shared hosting account?

    Thanks for the help

PHP can use and manipulate XML, so the answer is yes.

You will need a minimum of a reseller account on a cPanel/WHM server to make use of the cPanel/WHM APIs.

Thanks for the confirmation. That's what I suspected that I'm supposed to do. :D
