I am new to cPanel an forums so forgive me.

I wanted to be able to see my mail from horde in Outlook so went through the auto setup in Control panel but this did not seem to work?

installed the settings manually as instructed underneath enabling SMTP settings and making sure SMTP was the same as pop setting. I can download all my mail but am unable to send anything from outlook via horde I hope someone will be able to walk me through the process from scratch As I have obviously set it up wrongly

Many ISPs block people from using port 25 (the port SMTP uses). As a result, your SMTP may not be working because your ISP blocked it. Contact your hosting provider and ask them if they run SMTP on another port. Typically this port is port 26, but that may not be the case depending on their setup.

You can determine who your hosting provider is by visiting:

Using POP3: If you use POP3, then by default Outlook / Outlook Express will automatically download new messages from the server and then DELETE them from the server once it has retrieved them from your local machine. This means that you will NOT see those messages from within Horde if your Outlook previously connected and retrieved the messages.

There is an option in Outlook/Outlook Express to leave the messages on the server as well. You might want to check the advanced settings and tell your Outlook to leave a copy of the messages on the server after it downloads them.

Using IMAP: You can set your account up to use IMAP instead. In this way, all of your messages will STAY on the server and you will be able to see the message subjects in your Outlook. Then when you click on a message in Outlook that you want to view, it will retrieve the full message from the server.

Using IMAP is nice if use webmail alot in conjunction with one or more computers running an email client such as Outlook and you want to make sure the messages are always available.

Downside of Using IMAP: If you set your Outlook up to use IMAP and you have no internet connection, you can't view any of the previous messages unless you sync'd your IMAP folders and made sure to have IMAP download the message bodies.

In summary, choose which method you want. If you want to use one or more POP3 clients in conjunction with the webmail interface and you want to have all messages available in webmail and in your Outlook clients, then set up POP3 on all Outlook clients so that it leaves a copy of the downloaded messages on the server instead of deleting them. Or set up IMAP. But remember that if you set up IMAP, you don't have full copies of all of your messages for offline viewing in Outlook (when you are without an internet connection) like you would if you had used POP3 instead. I believe you can use IMAP in your Outlook and tell it to sync the folders with the IMAP server though, which may actually download and store all messages bodies too.

Doh - I didn't read this part and instead read the first part of the message and 'assumed' you were wanting to know about having your email available in both Webmail and Outlook.

Check to see if your ISP is blocking port 25 by doing the following:

    1. Go to START, then RUN
    2. Type in CMD and then hit <enter>
    3. Type: TELNET MAIL.YOURMAILSERVER.COM 25

You should see an SMTP banner similar to:

    220-somehost.somedomain.com ESMTP Exim 4.68 #1 Thu, 11 Oct 2007 17:07:23 -0400

If you don't get the SMTP banner, then your ISP is likely blocking port 25 outbound.

In this instance, you can contact your host and find out if they support SMTP on an alternate port (such as 26 or some other). If they do, you can go into your Outlook advanced settings and configure the SMTP port to be whatever alternate port they provide you.

If your ISP is blocking port 25 outbound and your hosting company does not have an alternate SMTP port available to you that your ISP isn't blocking, then you may have to resort to using your ISP's mail server to send outbound mail (and may have to set up SMTP authentication to authenticate into your ISP's mailserver with a valid email address in their domain).
