SOLVED

THe problems below were resolved by asking AWS to remove outgoing restrictions on my AWS Lightsail CPanel install. Simple as that.

BELOW IS MY WINGY THREAD, which ironically I solved hours later, but not after a few weeks of going round in circles.

---------------------------------------------

I have tried virtually everything I can find in these forums and Google and yet I cannot send email

My CPanel is a new installation. Mail arrives OK, but it wont send and I am going round in circles now which is not unusual for me with servers.

I have unlocked the ports, both 25 and 26 and set exim to use port 26. (I understand thats incoming only)

Seems that everything I do doesn't work.

MX toolbox says everything is fine except :

SMTP Banner CheckReverse DNS does not match SMTP Banner

Thought I would ask for help, but I suspect I will be given links for all the things searching for this already gives.

I also have
DKIM Problems Exist
and
SPF Problems Exist
een though I have copied the required settings.

I have worked throught the directions on
Reverse DNS (PTR) Valid

But I suspect that thats not right. However, all of this does not explain the inability to send to outside servers.

Any advice?

dig +nssearch 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa

also gived me results I dont understand.

I used my IP but that (modified as directed) and it gived me .ru servers and two IP's. Doesn't seem to have much bearing on the instructions:

As ever, I have no idea what I am doing, and am just going round in circles.

To be quite honest I cant beleive this is so difficult out of the box. My problem is that I have 100gb of mail. I tried setting some settings in resolve.conf and lost the server (I didn't have permission so I temporarily changedpermission on etc, but could not put it back)

2 days that cost me.

dig +nssearch 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa

Does nothing.

When I use my own IP, but muddle it up, remove last then use 3.2.1.in-addr.arpa

I get some .ru servers and ip's. This doesn't really give me much of an idea how to get to the next level.

For example, it might just be me, but the instructions for determining the network range and byte boundary are not that clear. Should I use 128/24 or will it depend on my settings? and if so, how do I find that. I dont even know if this will do anything, or even if my current ptr is wrong? Its says its correct, but it does not look mixed up like the ones in the example.

Of course, I just end up with 100+ browser tabs open and no idea where I am. Plus, I suspect that I might have died of old age by the time this 'thread' is 'approved for public display', so I guess I am really just talking to myself? Anyone else do a lot of that? I didn't think so.

Another thread that tantilisingly details the issue but without a fix. Of course here the guy has no firewall issues:

Nor can I do

telnet 65.55.37.120 25

Which is not surprising, what was I thinking imagining that would do anything, I probably dont even have telnet, whatever that is.

Whilst I did see this earlier, I think this is my issue:

I am on lightsail and I just fired up CPanel on the AWS platform, but it appears that they block outgoing SMTP ports.

Could this be my issue?

Who knows. I cant beleive that they would do such a thing AND sell Cpanel instances. How does that work?

Anyone know what Amazons resonoce to these requests are generally? THey asked for an 'elastic IP' which I have no idea what it is, so I sent them my static IP.

Fingers crossed.

SOLVED

In short, I had to request that AWS lift restrictions on sending email:

Thank you for submitting your request to have the email sending limit removed from your account and/or for an rDNS update.

We will require the following before this request can be processed.

- A clear/detailed use-case for sending mail from EC2.
- What type of configuration or setup have you implemented to prevent spam from originating from your EC2 resource?
I did this and got this responce:

Hello,

We approved your request for the removal of the EC2 email sending limitations on your Amazon Web Services account for the EU (London) region! If you requested removal of email sending limits on any other Amazon Elastic IPs, they've also been removed.
To apply for this you need to log in on this page I think
How do I remove the restriction on port 25 from my EC2 instance?

I did tell them that I think they should make it clear that AWS services dont allow mail to be sent. I simply didn't connect the dots, I thought that that was at some higher level and simple things like personal emails were OK.

This issue has cost me weeks of time as I hadd to trasnfer 100gb of mail a few times and destroyed several instances trying to resolve the problem. The moment the restriction was lifted, the mail worked.

I think that somehow, this 'solution' should be available for all the other people that have the same sympton. Unfortunatly, like most things I do, its a bit of a mess.

Ha! It is amazing what typing out thoughts in a logical manner can do sometimes! I'm glad you were able to track this down, but it's very common for providers to block the email ports.

If you need anything else, we're obviously a great sounding board for you :D
