I have edited my /etc/hosts file to keep track of a particular host name. The host is on the same machine, so I add its name to the same line as localhost. I've also tried to add it on its own separate line. And it's fine, until the update cpanel script runs, and removes it from the file.

What is in the update cpanel script that causes this?
And is there any way to prevent this from happening?

You might consider making that file immutable (chattr +i), then it will be impossible for CPanel to change it.
