exec() function??

why would the bellow function play up with fantastico? i wanted to install Gallery 1.5.1 and i cannot because of this
My Hosting Provider Said said:
cannot enable exec() function as it would cause too many problems with fantastico (half of the scripts would stop working)

Nope, I don't agree... Enabling that fuction should not cause half of the fantastico scripts would stop working under normal circumstances.

However, many hosts will disable certain php functions, such as exec(), to make their hosting environment more secure, as you can accomplish quite a few things with exec() on a box that is poorly secured.

Anyway, just my two cents.
