Exim 220 Reponse not right

    When I telnet on port 25 to my host, exim responds with:

    220-***************************************************200********0***0*00
    220**********************************************************************
    220 *******************

    This is not correct. The smtp_banner setting in Exim looks normal:

    smtp_banner = "${primary_hostname} ESMTP Exim ${version_number} \
    \#${compile_number} ${tod_full} \n\
    We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited, \n\
    and/or bulk e-mail."

    Has anyone else seen this behavior? It's intefering with the delivery of email from several sources.

    The problem was caused by the firewall, a Cisco PIX. Cisco has a "fixup" for various ports that is supposed to improve security on those ports. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with some versions of the PIX software. If you're having similar symptoms, upgrade your PIX software or turn off the fixup for SMTP.
