I just enabled exim on another port through WHM. It listed the service stat as up in the WHM. However, it will not accept remote connections to port 26. It responds to when I telnet to 127.0.0.1 and my IP addresses/hostnames from command line. Anyone have any clues that may help me? THX!

    WHM 9.3.0 cPanel 9.3.0-C55
    RedHat 7.3 - WHM X v3.1.0
    Exim 4.34

I assume you enable port 26 thru your WHM.. correct :)

Can you send email through port 25 ??

run this command from the shell:netstat -n | grep :26 | sort -k 5 -n and see if anything else is using this port.

Trying restarting chkservd and cpanel through the SSH shell.

    netstat -n | grep :26 | sort -k 5 -n comes up empty

    root@#[~]# netstat -naF inet |grep 26

    tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:26 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

    Already restarted cpanel and chkserv

    Thanks again

I can telnet out from this server to others that have exim on port 26 and send mail using mail authentication (took a while to find a nice base64 script for that). But from remote servers, any attempt to telnet to this server on port 26 times out.

Not sure what it is your trying to do here. port 26 is used as a secondary port for sending email, not intended for telnet

Telnet is used to test the ability to send mail through this host remotely using port 26. End users mail clients would connect to this host on port 26 to send their email. Telnet, being the most basic of email protocols, is used to test the ability to connect and send email from this host. Something that I cannot do for some reason. Thanks again.

    Hi,

You've said that if you telnet to port 26 on-server it works OK, does it still fail if you telnet to port 26 from off-server, it's not clear whether you've done that from your post.

If that doesn't work, then it certainly sounds like you're firewalling port 26 inbound. Double-check iptables -L -n to make sure that INPUT isn't set to drop port 26.

Also, check /var/log/messages to see if you get any errors when you telnet into the server remotely to port 26 incase anything shows up there.

Lastly, if it is still failing, could your NOC be blocking inbound port 26 for some odd reason?

Yes I can telnet from the problematic server to other servers using SMTP on port 26. Other servers can't access the problematic server from port 25 but they can from port 25. I can telnet to 127.0.0.1 and to my IP on port 26 from the problematic server as well. I suspect the firewall as well which I turned off iptables. Though this is odd:

    root@# [~]# iptables -D OUTPUT 1
iptables: Index of deletion too big
    root@# [~]# iptables -D OUTPUT 2
iptables: Index of deletion too big

root@# [~]# service iptables stop Flushing firewall rules: [ OK ]
Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: filter [ OK ]
    Unloading iptables modules: [FAILED]

    /etc/sysconfig/iptables-config

is nothing but commented out lines

Another odd thing is /etc/services has no 26 port listed but when I add it, I can no longer telnet to my own IP or 127.0.0.1 on port 26 on my server.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your responses.
