I can confirm this is a problem, it is occuring on my server also.

Oddly, It just started this morning, and I have been running the same build of CPanel (R-117) for the last couple of days. I have my updates set to Manual only.

My chkservd.log has identical entries regarding the timeout on send, but this is occuring roughly every ten minutes... everytime chkserv does its thing.

To make matters worse when I attempt to restart exim within WHM I get this error over and over again:

exim: exim startup succeeded Jan 7 11:22:09 picasso exim: antirelayd startup succeeded Jan 7 11:22:10 picasso exim: spamd startup failed exim has failed, please contact the sysadmin.

If I do the retart of exim manually with /etc/rc.d/init.d/exim restart there are no problems.

It would be interesting to see a solution to this problem - I experienced it yesterday and a friend of mine is having the same problems today.

VO mentioned it was partially due, in my case, to a cpanel update of glibc as well as a corrupted spool file.

Anyone have a definitive solution to this yet?

well, exim has &failed& 70 times since my post...

Like I said, I have all of my updates on manual... it started today.

It seems like perhaps even if updates are on manual there are some updates that still get through, which would prove quite problematic of course. To be on the &safe& side, in case something was &secretly& updated but required another update to work properly, as has been historically true, I ran upcp, didn't fix anything though.

Well - I thought VO fixed the problem - it looks like they just disabled chkservd.

Get's old having to manually manage the queue.

VO doesn't fix problems, they just pretend to... while making things worse in the process, but that's another story.

That's what I ended up doing, disabling chkserv, but that's hardly a solution. I moved up to an &edge& build, instead of &Release& to see if perhaps that would fix the problem, it didn't.

My antirelayd was modified today:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2517 Jan 7 03:38 antirelayd*

I think that is the problem... I didn't have any updates for several days until this evening when I moved to the edge series, but SOMEHOW that file was still changed!!!

I checked another WHM/Cpanel server and it was also modified today:

rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2517 Jan 7 02:38 antirelayd

This guy's server is also crashing exim on a routine basis now....

Turning off &spamd& doesn't have any effect...

If I try to restart exim on the command line I get this:

Shutting down exim: [ OK ]
Shutting down antirelayd: [ OK ]
Shutting down spamd: [FAILED]
Starting exim: [ OK ]
Starting antirelayd: [ OK ]

Through WHM I get two/three pages of continuous succeeded & failed messages for all email related services.

This is getting to be a bit ridiculous.

I have submitted support request, but they need my root pass.
Don't like it as this password will be stored on their support system database...

I hate this.

Same here.

I want to know how the hell the Cpanel software was changed when I have everything set to manual and did not update it manually!!

This started at 3ish AM yesterday, exactly when that file was changed.. something is fishy... especially considering that my upcp cron doesn't start until after 4am...

I'm not going to give my root password to these people, because I don't feel as though I can trust them, even if I did change it immediately after they were done. The purpose in me posting as much detailed information as I have is to avoid that sort of thing. I'll send them copies of the scripts that &spontaneously& changed, but no root access.

This problem, apart from being unbelievably annoying due to the emails and aim messages every ten minutes, is causing smtp send to be delayed sometimes upwards of 30 seconds, which then leads to multiple complaints from clients.

This is the reason that many of us set to manual updates only, and before the option would comment out or remove the upcp cronjob.

And here I thought is was just me.

I updated Cpanel on 03-01-05 10:15 PM (to E133) and then received:

exim failed @ Tue Jan 7 03:53:26 2003. A restart was attempted automagicly.
exim failed @ Tue Jan 7 04:45:34 2003. A restart was attempted automagicly.

I have not received anything since.

What I also did on the update (for protection) is to not only make Cpanel/WHM Updates, manual, I also set DarkORB Package Updates & Security Package Updates to manual as well. I was having a problem with 2 Users being shown in TOP that I couldn't track down. Although that problem is now cleared up, I don't know if it was from the &manual& changes I made. Didn't happen right away though.

Other relative items would be some crontab settings I have:

20 * * * * /scripts/addfpmail
1 22 * * * /scripts/fixquotas & /dev/null 2&&1

40 * * * * /scripts/mailperm
55 3 * * * /usr/bin/updatedb
47 3 * * * /scripts/upcp

Not sure if any of the above is relevant or helpful to others, I just know that I too, recevied the Exim restart msgs. after an update, but only got two -- then the problem &automagically& disappeared.

My server &magically& repaired itself also... this is quite fishy and suspicious.. but oh well, I'm glad it's &fixed& for now at least.

I am also having the same problem (in a Sort) I am getting this error message sent to me every 5 minutes since I enabled the relay blocking. This is a new setup since last week and I pointed DNS today.

The thing is if I run exim in command line,
Status = running.
Stop - stops everthing OK
Start - starts OK

But WHM still has the blinking red light and I keep getting these anoying messages.

You should disable the smtp blocking tweak security setting since you have a broken/old iptables or kernel.

I'm going to let the people that are paid to fix it, do it right !

In the meantime I am forwarding every 5 minute error I get to them untill they wake up.

BTW: I have another problem that I can't figure out.??

All my named.net accounts can't log into the server... Been searching the forum for hours. Can't find anything yet... Any Ideas from anyone here ?

Thank you.

We got it fixed. Apparantly the SMTP Tweak makes a mess of email and stops exim from running correctly. It also stops the mail que from sending stuff out for some reason. We turned it off and mail started running and all services are GREEN after running the mailmanfix script.

Hi,

I am having a similar problem - chkservd restarts exim every 8 mins but exim seems to run fine during the 8 mins. I do not have SMTP Tweak enabled so that could not be the problem. This just started happening a couple of hours ago.

Any ideas?
