Since you're being shown permission errors when Exim tries to access log files, I'd first check the permissions on the relevant files.

Check the ownership and permissions of /var/log/exim_mainlog, /var/log/exim_rejectlog and /var/log/exim_paniclog.

For me these all have the ownership mail:mailnull with permissions of 0640.

    The permissions are correct

    They are:

    0 -rw-r----- 1 mailnull mail 0 Mar 26 12:45 exim_mainlog
    0 -rw-r----- 1 mailnull mail 0 Mar 26 12:45 exim_paniclog
    0 -rw-r----- 1 mailnull mail 0 Mar 26 12:46 exim_rejectlog

I cleared the files with : cp /dev/null to see if it will log errors when I try to reload exim.

    Also noticed

    Also did:

    su mailman

    cd /var/log

    And got a:
    bash: cd: /var/log: Permission denied

    and:

    tail -20 /var/log/exim_mainlog
    tail: /var/log/exim_mainlog : Permission denied

    I did a:

    /scripts/fixmailman and then /scripts/reinstallmailman

    still same problem
