Exim Failed need urgent help!!

Hi every1 ive just had to reinstall my whole server and went to check exim logs as it failed i have tried reinstalling it about 20times already and any ideas on this error?

check the owner:group on the /var/spool/exim folder and make sure its mailnull:mail

if not set it that way

and make sure the permissions are 0750 for the /var/spool/exim directory

Ok tried that and,


[email protected] [~]# chown -Rf mailnull:mail /var/spool/exim
chown: `mailnull:mail': invalid user
[email protected] [~]# chmod -Rf 0750 /var/spool/exim
chmod: cannot access `/var/spool/exim': No such file or directory

What OS are you running? also do a ls -lsa /var/spool/ and also do a locate exim and paste your results.

Heres a bit of info about the box that Karl is on about.

Firstly the whole of the /var has been copied from the old box, FC2, same setup.
Secondly we copied the shadow and passwd files from the old box to the new as well.
Thirdly when restoring the accounts from the backups (<username>.tar.gz) i had to first userdel -r <username> before it would install, and on some accounts, there was a matching group <username> that i had to remove, as well as the entry in httpd.conf.
Fourthly, the group and user Exim has been deleted, and the group and user for mailnull (or nullmail, cant remember which) mail and mailman still exist.
Fifthly, the owner for /var/log has been changed, to 93 (UID?)
Sixthly, the owner for /var/spool/exim was mailnull (or nullmail, cant remember which), chmoded to exim, changed back by itself, chmod'ed back to exim, and it hasnt changed since.

The chowning of /var/spool/exim was in attemt to cure the 'permission denied' error, and even setting permissions to 0777 still gave that error.

The ownerships for /var/spool/exim and all subdirectories is supposed to be mailnull:mail if it is not exim will fail. You need to correct that first.

Osiris is my Hostname, and there is my IP, DoS me if you feel like it :P

not sure what RCPT is, any help welcomed

EDIT: turned off 'verify the existance of mail senders' and - exim failed to restart.
EDIT: Since that change it refuses to start, enabling 'Verify existance... ' and it still refuses to start :S - it did start origionally tho, since i setup the new account/group and chown. checking perms now.
EDIT: Perms are fine, dont know why it wont start now :S

BIG-EDIT: god knows how but i got it working, (chmod 777 * ? ;P) anyway, it starts now, just rejects me saying it cant verfiy the sender (me :s) - in other words back to square 1, with the error above
