Exim file ??

    what is the /etc/exim/authtab file for and how is it used ??

    From a quick look, it's for SMTP AUTH login details. In exim.conf it uses checkuserpass subroutine in exim.pl which in turn uses checkpass subroutine which does a compare on the crypt() password in /etc/exim/authtab and returns "yes" or "no".

    Having said that, I'm not sure that it is used anymore. There is a script to regenerate it here:
    /usr/local/cpanel/bin/updateauthtab

    But, I think it's now redundant and the following is used:
    /home/username/etc/domain.com/shadow
