    Hi Guys ,

I don't know you guys have this problem or not ,

We have been using mailScanner for a long time , and it's having a lot of defunct and also with exim too .

I don't know that there's anything wrong with my system or not .

But do you have any suggestion what could be the cause ?
    Traffic , mis-configuration?

    Please advise ,

By the way , i'm using waytotheweb 's mailscanner package ...
it's working well , but i'm just too paranoid with the defunct and zombie process.

You can kill all instances of mailscanner and stop exim, then restart both services. There is no need to worry, since MailScanner and exim are working properly.

    Hi AndyReed ,

    Thank you for your reply.

I have tried stop and start both exim and mailscanner a lot of times but seem that every time when i have the mail coming in , the mailscanner process will be zombied , and for a while it 's gone , but most of the time exim process is permanently zombied until i restarted server.

Any ideas on this one ?

    Thank you Guys ,
    George

SSH to the server and issue these commands (in that order):
    ps auxfwww
The second column from the left shows the PID for each user
    kill -9 PID
PID is the number for any process you wish to stop.
    then
    /sbin/service MailScanner start
    /sbin/service exim restart

    Go on, have a guess
There is no need whatsoever to restart MailScanner if you see <dufunt> processes. They are completely normal and expected and have no effect on the running system.
