Just to confirm (since it's not 100% clear), is this an issue with a PHP script sending mail, or is it an issue with an email filter piping to a PHP script?

In either case, first check the logs /var/log/exim_mainlog and /var/log/exim_rejectlog for more information.

    Go on, have a guess
AS webignition has said, you'll have to have a look at your exim logs when you send such an email through to find out why it's failing, that's the only way you're going to stop the error from being generated.
