Exim won't start

Not sure what has happened but this morning exim has failed and won't restart:

/etc/init.d/exim restart
Shutting down exim: [FAILED]
Shutting down spamd: [ OK ]
Starting exim: /usr/sbin/exim: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[FAILED]
Starting exim-smtps: /usr/sbin/exim: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[FAILED]
