If you process A LOT of mail these settings are great for OUTGOING.... it can make incoming a little slow though.
I use these settings a a couple of "heavy mail' servers and it works great.... keep in mind this is outgoing mainly.
Just replace your defaults with the below settings.
They will be very close to the top of your /etc/exim.conf
smtp_connect_backlog = 50
smtp_accept_max = 100
queue_run_max = 2
queue_run_in_order = false
split_spool_directory = true
queue_only_load = 5
smtp_load_reserve = 5
deliver_queue_load_max = 5
