Eximstats has failed and wont start because whatever script it uses does not support the PHP5 (if PHP) or other ways of interacting with MySQL4.1. It fails with access denied because of the password. This has only happened since the last cpanel stable update IIRC.

This means that not only does eximstats fail, but it fills my mailbox daily with errors.

Downgrading to MySQL4 seems flawed at best.

What are cpanel doing about this ?

    Thanks

No idea what they are doing about it - have you checked or logged an entry in bugzilla to let them know?

Adding this to my.cnf fixed the problem:

    # Use old password encryption method (needed for 4.0 and older clients)
    old-passwords

Then restart mysql and then restart eximstats.
