Extremely slow IMAP

I have three customers that are telling me there IMAP connections are extremely and painfully slow. One only uses his inbox while the other two have 5-10 folders each. Two i know for a fact do not have any type of firewalls, while the third say he doesn't.

The slowness is occurring in Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, "Thunderbird", and Apple Mail. We've tried IMAP and IMAPS in each.

I have already removed the following lines from the /etc/xinetd.d/cpimap file and restarted xinetd as suggested in previous posts.

# log_on_success += USERID
# log_on_failure += USERID

Any ideas?

I believe this is due to the imapd doing ident lookups on the end user's machine and they don't have an identd running. If they run an identd the connection time should get back to a normal speed.

I had a ticket with cpanel on that a few weeks ago and the outcome was that ident lookups for imap can't be turned off at this time. :|
