Which do you think will result in less spam coming to a particular email address - forwarding it to

:fail: no such address here OR
    :blackhole:

The reason i ask, is we would like to reclaim some email addresses we had given up because of so much spam, and were wondering which of these, 1 year later, might convince spammers to stop.

i wasn't sure as :fail: might be better if they read it, but maybe worse if they didn't, and they just saw there was a response of some kind to their spam.

    It is hard to say.

If an address is "listed" on one of the valid email address lists that spammers buy and sell, chances are it will never be removed entirely.

Using :fail: can have negative effects. Not only does it create increased traffic levels through your mail server/network/internet, it can also validate a domain as email enabled. This could lead to increased attempts at other addresses for that domain.

On the other hand, :blackhole: for an address already listed as valid will just seem like an account that does not respond to spam.
