FC4 > FC5 via yum experiences/tips req.

Hey guys,

Given that fedora-legacy have retired support for FC4 I need to upgrade one of my boxes, the problem being is that my DC wont help (They have set builds, if you deviate they wont even talk to you about any issues you have let alone put a disk in the drive for you) and I have no physical access to the box (Its in another country).

Just wondered if anyone has done the upgrade via yum and any potential issues that may be caused, the box has a custom kernel compiled 2.6.16-rc6-060427a #1 SMP by the DC because of some of their control panel applets (Serial Console etc), we are only a small company and cant afford for the box to be down for too long, a rebuild would really make the sh*t hit the fan.

Any experiences/advice would be greatly appreciated

I've been trawelling the net since I posted this, there are a lot of mixed opinions on this, it would seem as if things tend to go better if you dont use any third party rpms.

Really need to get moving on this, any help would be very greatly appreciated

I would urge anyone wishing to attempt this NOT to do it, I experienced no dependancy issues, the upgrade appeared to go very well until the box was rebooted, thats when the trouble started!

The RPM database was completly empty, there were issues with python, perl amongst other things, no core system services would start other than cpsrvd which was just showing "Licence update in progress, please try later"

Using CSE from the WHM port I managed to get SSH to start and get in but all was not well, after 5 hours of fucking about I managed to get cPanel/WHM to work, exim & courier to start and apache to start, less can be said for everything else, yum wouldnt work either so in the end I gave up and rebuilt the box (Not good on a production server!)

Maybe I missed a few things but I followed the official fedora yum upgrade wiki as well as a couple of suggestions from google, I would urge anyone considering attempting the same thing to seriously re-consider!

Het is better to change os distro to centos 4. Fedora is a devel os and the support is only for couple moths or when a new version released
