According to our hosting service, the latest CPANEL update removed the checkboxes from the File Manager. Now when we want to do selective directory backups we must SHIFT/click or CTRL/click on a file or folder. Unfortunately it does not work. If we click on one or many and then try to create an archive via the Compress function, the entire directory is compressed.

This is a instance where they apparently thought they were making something that was not broken better instead made it worse. Does anyone know if there is a replacement or alternative file manager for CPANEL?

I'm not sure I understand. I've just created three directories and then 'Ctrl clicked' them all right clicked and choose to compress from right click menu, and it compresses only those directories I've selected.

Thanks for the feedback, however we tried this with WINSCP and amazingly got the same results. The worst part came when I tried to delete the 300mb archive, which was supposed to be only 2 file within KB range; as I mentioned it archives the entire directory regardless. So I tried to delete the 300mb archive and instead it started deleting all the files in the http directory!

The following folders have been deleted. I am looking through some old backups to try replacing them:

    _private
    _vti_bin
    _vti_cnf
    _vti_pvt
    _vti_txt

You can close this thread - our server host was nice enough to revert cPanel to its last version so we now have the checkboxes back and everything works as it should. I was also able to replace the accidentally deleted folders from last weeks CRON backup - thanks cPanel!

Not sure how the cPanel folks thought replacing something that worked so well with something as archaic as holding down a key while clicking the mouse was better.

Actually, click and drag also designed to work for selecting multiple files (in addition to shift and control clicking) in the updated File Manager, similar to how this works in many graphical file management utilities provided by operating systems.

This sounds to me like some sort of browser issue. Could you please post what browser (and version) you're using that was/is not working for you in the File Manager? Thanks.

Got it. We use Directory Opus here with checkboxes enabled so maybe that is why I am biased towards that functionality.

I tried Firefox 3.x first. Then I tried Chrome. Then I tried WINSCP. I know it seems weird but all three exhibited the same behavior; SHIFT/clicking or CTRL/clicking failed. Not only that but I could not 'unclick' and that caused the accidental file/folder deletions I mentioned a post or two ago. That's what lead us to the revert to the older version of cPanel.
