    Hi,

I was just wondering if it is possible to filter mail at SMTP time.
I have added many filters to my accounts, using "Fail with Message" - but I just end up with returned bounce messages most of the time.

Is there a custom exim configuration available, or perhaps Cpanel are planning this feature for a future release?

    Many Thanks
    Cameron

What precisely do you mean by this? That when you send mail that meets one of your filters for "Fail with message" that it bounces?

    dear David,

    Yes, exactly.
Rather than rejecting the SPAM during the SMTP phase, the filter is sending a bounce-email-with -fail-message to the recipient's fake email address which is then returned, or rather sits in my mail queue for days.

Is it not possible to reject the email during SMTP so that we don't rely on a correct return-path in the originating email?

    Thanks

Note that what you experiencing is occurring when the mail is rejected at SMTP time.

Do you have sender verification enabled in WHM -> Service Configuration -> Exim Configuration? I only ask, because when that is enabled, it should be preventing any mail not from a real email address from even being processed on your server.

I think CaMer0n wants a filter that instructs exim to close the connection before accepting the email, rather than accepting it and the generating the bounce message. But at that stage, the only known things are the sender IP address, sender email and recipient email - no content filters can be applied. And that kind of filter already exists in exim (for example, block if the sender IP is in RBL).
