I have used CAcert for some time now.
Just include a link on the https pages on your site to their site that allows the browser part to be installed. This removes the nag screens if the visitor installs the root cert part.
They are in negotiation to have this pre installed in browsers just like versign etc.
The link to install root certificate (I use the PEM format) is:
    https://www.cacert.org/index.php?id=3
I have installed it successfully on all versions of FireFox - Opera 7.5 - Mozilla 1.7 - IE6.

You need to set aside some time to read this site, you will find it useful if you do. Like all things ssl, this takes some understanding for the average person like me.

Don't forget to make a donation if you feel they have been of some use to you. This helps to keep this great idea free.
