i want to move some files from one server to another using ftp. the files are gziped, and are large, so i don't want to download from the old server to my pc, and then upload to the new server.

but, when i am in the shell acct on the new server, and i open ftp to the old server, i don't see all the files. i mostly see directories, and as i descend into directories, i don't see most files.

however, when i use a windows ftp client from my pc, and open ftp with the old server, i see all the files.

how can i make the files accessible via ftp from a shell acct?

    Go on, have a guess
Well, you should be able to see them. Maybe it's the ftp client on the server. See if you have ncftp installed and give that a try, it's a nice ftp client.
