ftp function for site members

Greetings,

I would like to create a site that allows members to log on and store files in a password proctected folder on our server. I would like the sign up process to automatically generate and place the users folder in a default directory. I would like the users login info and up-down load history stored in a database of some kind.

Any ideas?

is this functionality available with proftpd? Seems like it must be an available modification/add on - whereby a login process creates the account rather than the admin doing the work. . . Would be nice to bundle it with the mail account creation process.
