Does it actually fail on boot?

Run the following chkconfig command in SSH for that particular service, it updates and queries runlevel information for system services.
I've pure-ftpd installed on my server.

    Code:
    [root@test ~]# chkconfig --list | grep ftp
    pure-ftpd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

Turn the pure-ftp on in the run levels:
    [root@test ~]# chkconfig pure-ftpd on

Check if it's properly setup :
    [root@test ~]# chkconfig --list | grep ftp
    pure-ftpd 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
    OR here's another way :

Add the /etc/init.d/pure-ftpd script to the /etc/rc.local file. This script will be executed after all the other init scripts finish off.

    Code:
    Open /etc/rc.local file:
    [root@test ~]# vi /etc/rc.local

Add the entry in the end of the file:
    [B]/etc/init.d/pure-ftpd start[/B]
Save the file & exit, the next time the server is rebooted pure-ftp will start for sure :) Hope that fixes your issue :D
