A small amount of background. I want to use Big Brother from http://bb4.com to actively monitor our servers. The problem I am having is that Big Brother wants to read the messages file @ /var/log/messages. Trouble is, the user I create on the server to run BB under doesn't have access to /var/log/messages .

So my question is this, how do I give a user access to /var/log/messages ?

you chould change permissions on your messages log. probably not that good of an idea. what exactly are you wanting BB to do for you? Perhaps I can recommend a product that doesn't need the world to run.

Yea, I tried changing the permissions, the problem with that is that cPanel comes along every 5 minutes and changes the permissions back.

BB passively monitors your server's vitals and verify's that services are up and running. This is really the only thing that its needed so far to run properly, doesn't really need the world, just need's read access to /var/log/messages
