After sending an email to a client, I just received:

SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<xxxx@xxxxxx.com>:
host mail.xxxxxx.com [xx.xx.xxx.xxx]: 550-"The recipient cannot be verified. Please check all recipients of this 550 message to verify they are valid."

This is definitely a valid email address. Why would it have bounced?

You need to check the actual progress of the email in /var/log/exim_mainlog and post errors that appear in there.

Some scripts that can help fix problems are:

    /scripts/updateuserdomains
    /scripts/mailperm

    That's a different problem:
Means you're probably using my exim deny ACL on the server and within the last hour you've sent out an email where at least 4 of the recipients were to non-existent IP addresses.

You should remove your IP address from /etc/exim_deny and check your mailing list.

I'm having the same problem but from someone sending OUT from the servre to a mailing list which responds back automatically, and its email back is what bounces.

Here's the raw source of the email:

Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the
    dmdaily@lists.dealmac.com mailing list.

I'm working for my owner, who can be reached
    at dmdaily-owner@lists.dealmac.com.

Messages to you from the dmdaily mailing list seem to
have been bouncing. I've attached a copy of the first bounce
    message I received.

If this message bounces too, I will send you a probe. If the probe bounces,
I will remove your address from the dmdaily mailing list,
    without further notice.

I've kept a list of which messages from the dmdaily mailing list have
    bounced from your address.

    Here are the message numbers:

    374

--- Enclosed is a copy of the bounce message I received.

    Return-Path: <>
    Received: (qmail 29271 invoked for bounce); 3 Jun 2005 23:55:50 -0000
    Date: 3 Jun 2005 23:55:50 -0000

    Subject: failure notice

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail2.dealnews.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

    <purchasing@domaininvolved.com>:
    xx.9.181.63 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550-"The recipient cannot be verified. Please check all recipients of this
550 message to verify they are valid."
    Giving up on xx.9.181.63.
