Without proper security measures in place, anything on the web is vulnerable. cPanel provides a management system environment, not a security suite.

As far as hacking into your account, your provider should look into this matter swiftly since the entire server could potentially be at risk.

For single accounts, simple defacing could be from many things. Password security, brute force etc. Your provider should have measures in place to prevent these and they should also have a backup of your account.

If they do not provide your recovery, you should seek another provider.

Looking at your other posts on this forum, you've setup an upload images script on your account, and you wanted to give another user access to your cPanel acount, it seems.

They can take over the entire server depending on the file/script uploaded and depending on your security.

Nobody here can help you really, you need to talk to your host who can read their logs and see how they got into your account.

If this is the case, then your provider may be asking YOU to seek another provider.

In your server did you have Firewall and Brute Force Detection? Because in mine I get attacks like this in a regular basis.

Its the most common way to access the server really.

Did they neglect to inform you of this move? You had to find out by asking them?

If 'yes' to the above 2 questions, definitely time to find another Hoster.

Ask them how its possible that your site is lost if they restored backups that should include all accounts?. I've seen this before and would bet that ALL sites were lost.

I've seen a situation where, for whatever strange reason, a single site did not get backed up properly. It just was't there. In fact, this has happened to me with Cpanel. I do not know whether it was human error or some gremlin in the system, or just bad luck on the poor guys part. Strange things do happen.
