Have a client getting this error when checking his email.

    ---------------------
there was a problem logging onto your mail server. your user name or password was rejected. server response: 'err mailbox is locked by process 4801&
    ---------------------

He hasn't changed anything. To try and fix the solution we tried to change his password, but it didn't help, still getting the error.

    Any ideas?

Try running the mail box script from whm, and see if it repairs the mailboxes, it will do it for all the users, and it cant do any damage, just fixes. May be worth a shot

i am getting this error "Mailbox is locked by process 6248" when checking an email. I have gone to WHM and used Rebuild/Fix Mail Dbs/Boxes. I still get the error. Any Ideas as why?

Could the user be checking webmail and pop at the same time? I had a client who had an annoying habit of doing that. 10 or so people all checking info@domain.com at the same time.

I can honestly say that is not a factor. There are only three computers checking the same 5 emails and only one of the emails (serverinfo@domain.com) that are infected. They all check at different times at 15 min intervals. Occasionally they might check at the same time but highly unlikely. Any other ideas as to why this one email would be locked out?

I have the same problem, and can't currently get to my shell account to check to see if the mailbox.lock file is there. I don't see it in File Manager for the account in question.

I sure hope it doesn't happen often, that would truly suck since it's possibly for my anti-spam program and Outlook to check at the same time. Seems like the server should be self-cleaning in that respect.

There might be a zombie process left over from a previous login that had opened the mailbox file and flagged it as locked and then never closed properly. See if there are any old zombie processes that shouldn't be running any more. Worse comes to worse, can try rebooting the server to kill any and all zombie processes. Just a thought though, this isn't a definite answer to the problem.

go into shell, view that inbox.lock file. it should contain a number, the pid of the process that locked it.

do a ps ax |grep PID, where PID is that dumber from inbox.lock.

Usually is a zombie cppop process.

    kill PID

    delete inbox.lock.

    Should work after that

POP3 is not really meant to be used by multiple programs/computers at the same time... and so it locks the mailfile, so only one process at a time can mess with it, to avoid corrupting your mailbox. But sometimes, the lock files don't get removed properly, for a number of possible reasons. Otherwise, it does cleanup after itself and remove the lock files so that the next process can access the mailfile.

I've never had these lock file issues... but then I and my clients only check mail with one program or computer at a time.
