Started having email issues on my server last Friday. Several clients reported that the Mailer-Daemon was bouncing back emails. SO I tried of two different hosted accounts to send email with a test account I set up. I got the same result off of both, even after restarting Exim. Here is the bounce back email -

    Code:
Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    Try the following command:

    Code:
    exim -bt jstest@testhost.com
Where jstest@testhost.com is the actual email address that is failing with the Verification failed message.

    Tristan -

I ran the command, and sent another email. I got the same results with both accounts.

You are going to need to post the results of running the command, since the point of the command is to see what it outputs. It isn't a command to fix the issue but to diagnose the issue.

Could you provide the actual email address here or message it to me? I want to run the command on my own machine to see the results. In fact, if you could provide both email addresses that would be dandy.

It appears that there was an issue with my VPS that my provider still has yet to answer. However, I thought i'd post what part of the problem was -

Server A has an issue with email account bounceback
Server A has to domains that have two test email accounts set up to troubleshoot mail issues.
Email accounts are used to send test email to an address that is on Server B

Server B host the target email address for sending the emails.
Server B has host the new builds for the two domains on currently hosted by (A) with no email accounts created yet.

    Reason for the email error
Server A sends the email to Server B
Server B gets it and says, Yes; those domains are on me server, let me vailidate the emails account
There are no email accounts created for the two domains on server B
Server B was unable to verify user and rejects the query
Server A recieves Mailer Daemon reject and stupid admin (me) thinks it is a reject from Server A

If I so wouldn't have to learn the hard way ;D

    Hello Tristan,
I am having a similar issue so I hope you can help me.

In my case we get that error when users from a customer's main domain (domain.com) try to send emails
to email addresses at a subdomain (g1.domain.com) or viceversa.

It happens that I have subdomain configured at Google Apps (g1.domain.com) and
have some aliases on CPanel are configured to forward emails to the subdomain at Google Apps.

    Something like this:
    john@domain.com -> forwards to -> john@g1.domain.com

I tried the commands suggested above and got the following error messages:

    root@pi3 [~]# exim -bt john@g1.domain.com
john@g1.domain.com is undeliverable: No Such User Here
    root@pi3 [~]# exim -bt john@domain.com
    LOG: MAIN
lowest numbered MX record points to local host: domain.com (while routing <john@domain.com>)
john@domain.com cannot be resolved at this time: lowest numbered MX record points to local host

When a domain needs to route emails remotely rather than locally because the MX aren't pointing to the machine, that domain needs to be in /etc/remotedomains and removed from /etc/localdomains files.

    Try this:

    Code:
    # /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/updateuserdomains --force
    # /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/mailperm
If that does not help, please submit a ticket so that we may investigate directly.

This seems to be caused from the same bug that has been posted about here where after migrating an account mail can't be sent or received. It can be fixed by adding a forwarder. I had to add then delete forwarders on all migrated domains to get their email to work.

-When sending from a client it would give the unable to authenticate error.
-When sending from webmail it would give no such user error even though the account HAS to be there we are in the accounts webmail!
-When mail was sent to them it would give no such domain bounceback
-When sent from one account to another from the same server it would give no such user bounceback

All of this was fixed from the add/remove forward deal.

Now I have 1 issue left, even though the accounts work my SpamExperts filter isn't working for all of the migrated accounts. I am hoping to find someone that knows what causes these symptoms so I can repair it. The mail comes in and out but the SpamExperts filter doesn't report seeing any mail for incoming/outgoing emails. This only happens with the accounts that had this bug so adding then removing a forwarder isn't fixing everything just relieving a symptom.

Anyone have a firm handle on this bug?
