I had the same error with my apache server after some manual configuration...

Have you done any manual configuration to your proftpd configuration?
If not, a possible suggestion is to rebuild proftpd's conf file.(not suggested unless you know what your doing)

Try going to command prompt and loading proftpd by hand. If it returns any error messages what so ever, that is why your ProFTPD server will not start from WHM.

Your hostname is probably buggered on that particular box....
Run /scripts/ipcheck from the shell as root-

And or, as stated above
/etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd restart

Should give you some more details.....
And, you should at least have a proftpd.conf backup in /etc/proftpd
do a ls -la | grep proftpd, inside /etc

Here's what I get on an IP check

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
The hostname (localhost.localdomain) resolves to . It should resolve to 207.113.20.115. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by
/etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you
believe everything else is correct.

do this:

In a shell, type tail -f /var/log/messages

then try and start proftp (from WHM).

What error do you get in the messages file? That shuld tell you what needs fixing.

Thank you so much. I was able to fix it. I don't know if it will help anyone else but what hapepned was a moved my server to a new rack, I updated the ip's in proftd.conf.
I accidently left out the &t& in &Virtualhost so it read &virtualhos

Thnks!
