Forgive my ignorance but when browsing on some of my directories I saw that /home/(user)/tmp was very large it contains directories like analog, awstats etc, but one of my users dir has over 1 gb. Can this directory be deleted?

    Thanks

Yes, but they would lose all statistics (and the directory will probably automatically recreate).

Then how can I make this directory smaller?

Is the directory that large due to the stats programs (i.e. analog, webalizer, etc.) or some other program? If those directories currently hold large amounts of data (especially hundreds of stats png files), you can do some tweaking with stats on your machine.
Maybe limit them to one stats program?
You can take a few other actions, for example, convince your user to download old stats files to their local machine periodically, and then delete the appropriate files on the server, that may help. Just a thought.

Especially urchin is a very space hungry stats program, I actually disabled it after a while on all our servers and just deleted the urchin folder in the domains /tmp which freed up a lot of space :)
