I have a client who only wants to host a subdomain of his main domain on our servers.

Strange request but I guess its been done before?

Anyway. I setup the account under the pretext that they where hosting the real domain. We will use the example.

    domain.com

So in the domain box under new account I entered domain.com

Then after the account was created I edited the DNS zone and added the subdomain - subdomain.domain.com to point to domain.com that points to my servers IP.

This person then went into his current DNS solution and put the subdomain.domain.com to point to my servers IP.

I can ping subdomain.domain.com and I get my servers IP but when i visit http://subdomain.domain.com I get the static webpage as if I had just visited http://ipaddress

Is it possible to just host a subdomain.domain.com with out hosting the acutal main domain? Should be.

Any ideas as to why we are seeing the behavor we are seeing?

    Yes, this is possible.

When you create the account, create it as a sub-domain.

IOW, in WHM, create the account as subdomain.domain.com

They can then create the appropriate A records on their nameservers to point to the IP address you are using.

Ok. I had done that initally but the client was done some kind of funky forwarding that must have been messing with it.

Somehow they set their dns to a poitn where even if you did a ping of the subdomain you got their IP but if you used the name in the browser you got my http://ipaddress page.
