    Hi,

I know this will probably sound obvious, that's why I'm posting this in the New User Questions.

I don't know what to use as a Hostname. Do I have to buy a domain name, point it to the server IP and use this? When I got my dedicated server they gave me an hostname LIKE this http://cl-txyz-3xcl.privatedns.com. I tried changing it to myname.privatedns.com but it doesn't work. My understanding is that this hostname is temp until I get my own.

And that is ze question, how to get my own?

    Thanks for your help.

Hostname can be on any domain name that you own. Hostname is in the form of a subdomain i.e something like server.yourdomain.com so if you own any domain name then you can setup a hostname with that domain name.

Not really, the domain can be hosted anywhere but you need to make sure that the hostname resolves to that server IP address.
