Hot to add imagefttext to PHP?

Ineed to enable imagefttext and imageftbbox in PHP, but I cannot find a guide on how to to do this from the command shell. Can anyone help?

Might sound like a silly question, but have you checked the requirements for these functions?

Yes I have. I am working on a manual install of Freetype now.

FreeType Support and GD are listed under Software->Apache Update.

I have the dreaded error about not being able to update the lib when I try to re-compile. I am having my NOC look into it.
