    Hi,

There is an option for "add on" domains in cpanel.
So that you could have example1.com be hosted on an account: example.com in a directory such as example.com/example1.com/

how does cpanel make this work? is it done by having a .htaccess in example.com that redirects to the example1.com folder OR is it done by additional lines in the DNS zone file. What exactly is the method by which add on domains work?

cPanel creates a subdomain example1.example.com with document root as /home/user/public_html/example1.com and consequently an additional virtual host in httpd.conf file for example1.example.com is also created. example1.com (addon) is an alias to this virtualhost hence all requests are automatically guided to this folder example1.com.
