When I try to add my background images from the images folder in cPanel, either nothing happens or it overlays the rest of the stuff on the page :( The side panels look much better with a background image or some sort of colour what can I do about this?

You might do better to find a forum dedicated to website building, or ask your host for tips to get you started in the right direction. This isn't actually a cPanel issue, but a website coding issue which is out of the scope of these forums.
