How do I get my site up for viewing

I'm so new at this that I still have the cyber umbilical cord attached.

I created a website with multiple pages e.g. Index, gallery-thumbnails with links, and a community newspaper archive.
The program I used to create it was Web Page Maker V.2 I struggled building it but got somewhere near where I wanted to be in the end.
I then took the bold step of publishing it, so I entered my FTP address and hit the button. The last few words; Published successfully sent me into raptures, but I was soon brought down to earth because I thought that my site would have been on the net. Wrong again!!!

I went into cPanel X and opened file manager because to me, that seemed to be the appropriate folder to go to. All my images and relevent stuff was there, but obviously much more work is required. So my question is:

What should I do next?

I've looked at the tutorials but I cannot find one to suit my needs.

All advice and help appreciated

Have you made sure that, the index.htm/php and all other files that you want to be viewed by people on the web is in the public_html folder? If they are not there, you will not be able to get to the from the web.

Thanks to both of you for the advice.

I've looked at the cPanel and in File manager the layout starting from the top is thus;

Current Folder
Create New folder

Broad black arrow = upload files

.cpaddons
.cppanel-datastore
.htpsswds
.sqmaildata
.trash
etc
images = when I click on this all my pics are in it
mail
public_ftp
public_html= when I click on this I get 12 yellow folders and 4 notebook icons
tmp
www
Below this there are 22 notebook icons with the appropriate file names alongside them, mainly pics.

* * * *
I've looked at the tutorials and although they are very helpful I cannot find one that will guide me through successfully publishing a site.

I'm sure that many of you have been in the same position as I now find myself in, that is, knowing nothing and needing help badly. I've tried to publish with CuteFtp but I made a mess of it, so your help would indeed be most appreciated.

If it's too messy to take me through it please explain how I can reset the account so I can start afresh.
Thanks

Upload into public_html

Hi Pippin,

As the others said - you need to upload your files AND images INTO the folder called public_html. What you have described here is that your lmages (at least) are on the same lvel as the public_html folder.

To do it correctly from Web Page Maker you just need to add public_html to the directory name where it asks you where you want to upload to. And you have to have a folder IN public_html which is ALSO called 'images' for the images to go to. I don't think Web Page Maker will automatically create this folder for you.

So first go in through your control panel and breate the images folder and then try again.

Good luck
Sylvie

Sylvie, Thanks for your reply, I'm grateful to you for taking the time and trouble to help me.
I'm slowly getting myself into a tangle and the only solution could be to reset the account.
I done a search in past threads for similar subjects and I followed instructions (as I saw them) 'uploading from my hard drive' and the page that is displayed on the Internet is raw data.
I should rename my (proposed) site 'Whatamess.com

Could you please expand a little. Can I upload the folder again from Web Page Maker and it will replace or overwrite the current folder in cPanel?
Just to clarify the layout with the Web Page Maker publish destination box, when I click on the publish button it takes me to 'Remote site settings'. It requires four entries under ftp information;

Site Host . . mysite.com
Remote folder . . is this where I'd enter public_html????
there is a port box preset at 21 but it it has a scroll bar so I can set it to any number
username . . . I know this one
password . . . and I know this:eek:

Thanks again,
Pippin
