Can anyone help install mcrypt for RHEL 3 (the commandline version, not for php or perl)? I ran into dependency problems when compiling from source:

checking for libmcrypt - version >= 2.5.0... no

but libmcrypt-2.5.7 is installed... Any suggestions?

Is there an rpm somewhere to make this easier?

You need to install libmcrypt for it to work. Grab the source for both via:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/mcrypt

And FYI, as far as i know, the version compiled into php is the latest and isn't installed in any way in which would limit its usage to just php. It needs to be compiled in as normal before it can be used via php, which is what cpanels buildapache does.

There is also an rpm for libmcrypt in Dag's repo:
