I did something really dumb the other day! I was using File Manager, meant to delete the content of home/user/public_html but I accidentally deleted home/user!!!

That basically killed everything!

At this point I have finally stopped sobbing (24 hrs later  ) and pieced together most of the work that I deleted. But I have one question before moving forward:
What do I do about all those folders that had been generated by whm/cpanel?

When I hit delete, I was in the HOME directory of MYSITE.com and I deleted all of the following folders:
etc
mail
public_ftp
public_html

There may have been more folders, those are the only ones I recall off hand. I managed to get "mail" to come back back by going into WHM and "upgrading" the account.

Can I simply create my own folders for:
etc
public_ftp
public_html

I am on a VPS and have root access, but before this disaster I had everything set up perfectly. I really don't want to erase the domain account because I am using it as a "reseller" and have configured a shared ssl cert that is finally working perfect. Plus this acct "owns" sub accts.

Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated!

The first obvious question ....

Does your server have backups turned on?

Do you have any backups for this site?

If you have backups, it should be fairly simple to restore that or merge in
the missing data from the backups.

Otherwise, you'll probably need recreate the missing folders and set the
correct permissions and any email or web data deleted is just gone and
you'll have to re-create whatever is lost.

It just occurred to me that you said "File Manager" ....

It is possible that the files and folders you deleted are in the trash.

If they did get moved to trash, that would also let you undo the mistake.

You will laugh, but I deleted the Trash folder at the same time I deleted everything else!

I may be a bit of a noob, but really this has to be the DUMBEST thing I have done in years!

My host backs up once a week. She is currently reinstalling the missing data, so I guess this issue has become moot!

I will be enabling the backup in the root whm (if i can ever get back in there... still being denied access due to brute force attacks....).

I think given time, I will learn to laugh at how bizarre and painful this week has become.

Glad to hear there is at least a backup somewhere :)

It is incredibly important to always keep good backups

You can clear the blocks (database based) and / or disable CpHulk from SSH

I agree 100%. And I was so proud of myself for constantly/regularly backing up... many as 5 times a day while developing the site I was working on.

Of course, my pride vanished when I deleted my public_html folder.... and the trash folder... and the backup folder!!! They were all sitting together at the top level!!!! :D

Good stuff... I am whitelisted now, thanks!
