i dont care for the backup system in cpanel...maybe im using it wrong, but last time i tried to configure it went absolutely haywire and i couldnt get my machine booted. how do you perform backups? ideally id like to sync my drives at least once a week with my desktop machine over the network.

We have secondary drive attached to each machine to which we're doing the backup.
Weekly it's being downloaded to our local server and archived.

so like an external hard drive that is just permanently mounted to your server?

No, it's just a server with two hard drives.
First is mounted as /home, second is mounted as /backup

There is no 100% safe solution, but with this one I can sleep well.
