I have always used shared hosting and changing providers meant simply providing two new url's for the name servers.

I now have vps and Web Host Manager.

Conceptually it is hard for me to understand how this works.

Hostname - This is set up, but I don't understand how it works.

openvz.centos.com - I thought this was enabled as something, perhaps the hostname or name server, but now I can not find it.

Is there any thorough explanation of how dns works?

I found this and it doesn't explain anything for me personally.

    Thanks.

My understanding now is that with vps, domainname.com should be registered.

Then, at the registrar, use NS management to point back to the VPS ip address and custom nameservers at the VPS.

So with domainname.com the custom nameservers could be ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com

Then, future domain names can simply use the nameservers ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com

My vps host also told me zone filters need to be created at the vps level to complete the process of resolving domainname.com back to the vps account. That is what I am trying to figure out now.
